There is so much to sing, play, and do in music! At Greenland Central School, each class comes to Music once a week. Over the course of the year, we sing, play instruments, dance, and explore many different kinds of music. Music classes are aligned to the National Music Standards.
At a quick glance:
Kindergarten: Students sing lots of songs together and learn basics like keeping a steady beat and the different kinds of voices--whisper, speaking, calling, and singing. Kindergarten participates in one of the two concerts.
1st: Students sing songs and learn some basic rhythms for the songs they sing. Students play instruments and do SQUILTS, (super quiet un-interrupted listening time) to learn to discuss the kinds of music they hear. First graders also perform in one of the school concerts.
2nd: As students sing and play music, they also write down their own ideas for creating patterns and melodies. Second graders practice and perform in the school concert.
3rd: The big hit in third grade is learning to play Recorder and participating in Recorder Karate, where students can earn a color belt for each song they master. Third graders are part of one of the school concerts.
4th: Besides participating in the concert, fourth graders learn about the different instruments in the orchestra, work on composition skills with rhythm patterns, and compete in the Harry Potter House challenge on a Hogwarts House team.
5th: Fifth graders learn the basics of piano/keyboard, including how to position their hands and what notes are where on the keyboard. After learning to read music and play it back, they compose their own music and perform ostinatos in class. The fifth grade also studies the great composers in Composer March Madness.
6th: Sixth graders challenge themselves with more complex rhythm reading and performing. They study blues music as a genre, play blues music, and write their own song. They also use Boomwhackers to perform popular musical hits.
7th: In seventh grade, students compose melodies using Hooktheory, study the art of lyric writing, and study Music History.
8th: The eighth grade learns the basics of playing guitar, studies music careers and using technology to compose musical soundtracks, and learns about a 20th Century musician for their final project of the year.
